I am happy to share that I am participating in LICHTUNG - Festival für lichte Kunst — "Lichtung" meaning both a clearing and light in German — a two-day art festival organised by artist Tom Meier at his forest studio and the surrounding woods just outside Berlin.

25 artistic positions explore the phenomenon of light and lightness through light, sound, kinetic art, site-specific installation and sculpture, video, mixed reality, live performance and music.

I will be showing OPAL (2026) — beneath the forest near Pätz, gas flows. Invisible, soundless, always present. The OPAL pipeline — land connection of Nord Stream 1 — runs directly beneath the ground where the festival takes place. Blue lasers shoot one kilometre through the nocturnal forest, making visible what the earth conceals.

Ik toon OPAL (2026) — onder het bos bij Pätz stroomt gas. Onzichtbaar, geluidloos, altijd aanwezig. De OPAL-pipeline — landverbinding van Nord Stream 1 — loopt direct onder de grond waar het festival plaatsvindt. Blauwe lasers schieten een kilometer door het nachtelijke bos en maken zichtbaar wat de aarde verbergt.

The Lumen exhibition brings together 30 multifaceted artistic voices from the Netherlands and Germany. The artistic contributions show an extraordinarily diverse spectrum of different media and perspectives in painting, photography, site-specific installations, video works and performances. Lumen is derived from Latin and means “light” or “opening.” In physics, lm is the abbreviation for the unit of visible luminous flux; in anatomy, it refers to the interior space of a vessel—a symbol of permeability. Thus, Lumen becomes a metaphor for what becomes visible in the in-between.

At the exhibition’s centre is the theme of light in all its manifestations: as sunlight or artificial light, technological innovation or atmospheric moment. Light creates presence, casts shadows, defines emphasis. It is both a material and a bearer of meaning—sensual, poetic, experimental, or speculative.
 
The venue Schloss Biesdorf is closely tied to the exhibition’s theme: the late neoclassical villa in eastern Berlin once served as the summer residence of Werner Siemens, a key pioneer of electrification in the 19th century. In the spirit of technological innovation and societal transformation, Lumen invites us to explore light as a cultural, physical, and aesthetic force. The architecture of the house, surrounded by a listed landscape park, creates a resonant space where past and present, nature and technology enter into dialogue.
 
The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive programme. This year's Schlossrevue on the evening of 6 September 2025 will also take up the theme of the exhibition with a musical and performative programme entitled Into the Light. Information on the revue and other events at Schloss Biesdorf will soon be available on the Schloss Biesdorf website.
The exhibition is curated by the painter duo Römer + Römer and emerged from an inspired exchange with Amsterdam-based light artist Peter Vink.

Choi + Shine Architects (VS) is een internationale designstudio, opgericht door Jin Choi en Thomas Shine. Choi studeerde Art and Architecture aan de Yale University en is geruime tijd lead curator geweest van het Amsterdam Light Festival. Ze heeft op dit moment een tentoonstelling bij Musee d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain in Nice.

De tentoonstelling presenteert de grootschalige houtskooltekeningen van Irina Birger naast de lichtinstallatie van Peter Vink.

Sinds 1998 werkt Birger aan houtskooltekeningen van alledaagse en technologische objecten zoals floppydisks, schakelaars, datakabels en harde schijven, elk dramatisch geïsoleerd en uitvergroot. Door deze transformatie krijgen deze ooit vertrouwde objecten nieuwe, bijna menselijke eigenschappen. Kabels veranderen in totems of heilige artefacten van denkbeeldige rituelen, terwijl vergrote harde schijven doen denken aan mausolea, bibliotheken of aan begraafplaatsen van data, misschien wel voor eeuwig bewaard. Birgers praktijk onderzoekt de menselijke drang naar verbinding, de ontwikkeling van onze lichamelijkheid door de tijd heen en de machtssystemen die wij creëren en onderhouden. Door de oudste tekentechniek van houtskool te gebruiken, geworteld in prehistorische grotkunst, slaat zij een brug tussen oeroude beeldtaal en hedendaagse informatietechnologieën. Deze tentoonstelling biedt een retrospectief overzicht van haar houtskool-werk, met tekeningen die voor het eerst aan het publiek worden getoond.

Voor deze tentoonstelling maakt Vink de monumentale lichtsculptuur “Ruimte III Rockin” die is gebaseerd op de maatvoering van het glazen plafond van zaal 3. Het raster van dit plafond wordt weerspiegeld in het kunstwerk dat speciaal gemaakt is voor deze tentoonstelling. Het patroon van heldere witte LED lijnen wordt onregelmatig onderbroken door kleur en geluid die als een soort ruis het strakke raamwerk doorbreken. Dit is een intuïtieve reactie van de kunstenaar die vaak neigt naar minimalisme in zijn werk. Vink probeert op speelse wijze zijn eigen dogmatische denkpatroon te bevragen. Daarnaast speelt de directe omgeving een rol: Arti et Amicitae is gevestigd aan het Rokin, een straat die rond 1564 bekendstond als ‘Rockin’. Vanuit dat perspectief fungeert het kunstwerk ook als een denkbeeldig podium voor een concert, waarop echo’s uit verleden en heden samenvloeien.
Samen creëren Birger en Vink een prikkelende dialoog tussen donker en licht, intuïtie en structuur, micro- en macroniveau. Hun werken contrasteren en vullen elkaar aan, en vormen zo een krachtige reflectie op hoe wij de wereld waarnemen, verwerken en bewaren—zowel fysiek als digitaal.

Bio Irina 
Birger Irina Birger is geboren in Moskou en woonde als tiener in Servië. Ze behaalde een BFA aan de Bezalel Academy of Fine Art and Design in Jeruzalem en een MFA aan het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam, waar ze momenteel woont.

Toen ze opgroeide in de Sovjet-Unie, ervoer Irina de krachtige mechanismen van propaganda die onafhankelijk denken en onderzoek onderdrukte. De methoden waren niet alleen praktisch, maar ook extreem visueel. De sociaal-realistische stijl en de stalinistische keizerlijke architectuur hebben haar artistieke ontwikkeling sterk beïnvloed. Hun monumentale arrangementen inspireren bewondering, nederigheid en verwondering, vergelijkbaar met de visuele impact van de heilige formaties.
Als gevolg hiervan is ze sterk geïnteresseerd in de visuele strategieën en formele principes van verschillende religies en culten, en verwerkt ze deze in haar werk. Centrale symmetrie, patronen, slogans en monumentale benaderingen komen vaak voor in haar werk.

Peter Vink (De Bilt, 1974) studeerde in 2001 af aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Sindsdien heeft hij naam gemaakt als kunstenaar gespecialiseerd in (soms zeer grootschalige) lichtinstallaties die altijd dienen als aanvulling op - of vertaling van - de specifieke locatie. Zijn werk is architectonisch, minimalistisch en innovatief, en weerspiegelt altijd het concept van de genius loci, de geest van een plek.

The exhibition presents Irina Birger’s large-scale charcoal drawings alongside Peter Vink’s site-specific light installation.

Since 1998, Birger has worked on charcoal drawings of everyday and technological objects—floppy disks, switches, data cables, hard drives—each dramatically isolated and magnified. Through this transformation, these once-familiar items take on new, almost human qualities. Cables become totems or sacred artifacts of imagined rituals, while enlarged hard drives resemble mausoleums or libraries—graveyards where data is preserved, perhaps indefinitely. Birger’s practice explores the human desire for connection, our evolving physicality over time, and the systems of power we construct and sustain. By using charcoal—the earliest drawing medium, rooted in prehistoric cave art—she bridges ancient mark-making with contemporary technologies of information transfer. This exhibition offers a retrospective view of her charcoal work, including drawings shown to the public for the first time.

For this exhibition, Vink is creating the monumental light sculpture ‘Room III Rockin’ which is based on the dimensions of the glass ceiling of gallery space 3. The grid of this ceiling is reflected in the artwork created especially for this show. The pattern of bright white LED lines is irregularly interrupted by colour and sound that break the rigid framework like noise. This is an intuitive response from the artist who often leans towards minimalism in his work. Vink playfully tries to question his own dogmatic pattern of thinking. In addition, the surrounding area plays a role: Arti et Amicitae is located on the Rokin, a street known as “Rockin” around 1564. From that perspective, the artwork also functions as an imaginary stage for a concert, on which echoes from the past and present merge.

Together, Birger and Vink create a compelling dialogue between darkness and light, intuition and structure, micro and macro. Their works contrast and complement each other, forming a powerful reflection on how we perceive, process, and preserve our world—both physically and digitally.

Bio Irina Birger 
Irina Birger was born in Moscow and lived in Serbia as a teenager. She received a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Fine Art and Design in Jerusalem and an MFA from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam where she is currently based. Growing up in the Soviet Union, Irina experienced the powerful mechanisms of propaganda that repressed independent thought and inquiry. Its methods were not just practical, but also extremely visual. Social Realist style and Stalinist Imperial architecture greatly influenced her artistic development. Their monumental arrangements inspire admiration, humility, and wonder, similar to the visual impact of the sacred formations. As a result, she is strongly interested in the visual strategies and formal principles of different religions and cults, and incorporates them in her work. Central symmetry, patterns, slogans, and monumental approach often appear in her work.

Peter Vink (De Bilt, 1974) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in 2001. Since then, he has made a name for himself as an artist specializing in (sometimes highly large-scale) light installations that always serve as an addition to—or a translation of—the specific site. His work is architectural, minimalist, and innovative, always reflecting the concept of the genius loci, the spirit of a place.

This Saturday 14 September and Sunday 15 September, I will show five unique prints during the Pakhuis Wilhelmina Biennale in Amsterdam at Katja -s Books & Multiples pop up store, which can be found on the first floor in the building.  These prints have never been shown in the Netherlands before.  

During the open days, these prints will be for sale directly through the Lachenmann Art Store.  All prints were released in an edition of 3 and were first shown at my exhibition ‘100’ at Lachenmann Art Frankfurt in 2023.

During the Pakhuis Wilhelmina Biennale, artists, designers and makers open their doors, with a total of 96 studios on display. I will be present on Sunday.

Langs de Waddenkust loopt sinds 2023 Het Ziltepad: een wandel- en fietsroute langs de ruige noordelijke kustrand van het land, in Friesland en Groningen. Het Ziltepad is een project van de stichting Alde FryskeTsjerken en Groninger Kerken en wordt de komende jaren steeds verder uitgebreid. Stichting Hi-Lo Art, een jonge organisatie die sinds 2022 openbare kunstwerken - de zg Bakens - in het Waddengebied initieert, treedt op als curator van vier kunstwerken langs het Ziltepad.  

Baken Het Ziltepad: Peter Vink bestaat uit vier verschillende, site-specific lichtkunstwerken van de gerenommeerde beeldend kunstenaar Peter Vink. In vier kerken zorgt hij voor een transformatie door licht: hij maakt een steeds andere toepassing die de kerk letterlijk in nieuw licht zet. De bezoeker zet de kunst zelf in werking. 
De opening van de vier kunstwerken vindt plaats op vrijdag 12 juli. Je bent op elke locatie (of op een van de locaties) van harte welkom.

PROGRAMMA
Op alle locaties vertelt de kunstenaar over zijn onderzoek naar de kerk en de vertaling daarvan naar een lichtwerk. In Usquert vindt de afsluitende feestelijke opening plaats, waarbij organist Wietze Ouwejan zal improviseren op het historische ‘rococo’- orgel (gebouwd in 1852 door Petrus van Oeckelen en in 2007 gerestaureerd in originele staat).

Over de kunstenaar

Peter Vink (de Bilt, 1974) studeerde in 2001 af aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Sindsdien maakte hij naam als ontwerper van (soms zeer grootschalige) lichtinstallaties die altijd een toevoeging aan- of een vertaling van de situatie ter plaatse zijn. Zijn werk is architecturaal, minimalistisch en innovatief en getuigt altijd van locus genii, de ‘geest van een plek’. Vinks werk was onder andere te zien in Nederland in de Gouden Bocht tijdens het Amsterdam Light Festival 2023; bij Wapenveld tijdens de IJsselbiënnale 2021; en permanent in het stadhuis van Hengelo (2020). Buiten Nederland exposeert hij met name in Duitsland en China.

"Erregung öffentlicher Freude" is a collaborative exhibition project by Ellen DeElaine (1982) and Sandra Schlipkoeter (1979), which takes place in the HilbertRaum in the Reuterkiez neighbourhood in Neukölln. As long-standing curators and members of the HilbertRaum, we are uniting 100 artistic positions from different countries in this project. The HilbertRaum, an established project space for contemporary art, has served as a platform for numerous exhibitions since 2015 and is an important meeting point in the Berlin art scene. 

 Our central theme is serenity in the midst of current challenges. From 19 April to 12 May 2024, we are inviting artists to present works that convey optimism and joie de vivre. In view of the crises of recent years, we are endeavouring to create a space for encounters and networking. Our aim is to invite the neighbourhood to dedicate themselves to art together in the hotspot region of Neukölln.

 Through a broad supporting programme, we want to facilitate new and old encounters as well as active collaboration between participants, residents and members. In order to promote an active approach to art and culture, we are planning public and free events for a broad target group during the four weeks, which will focus on the theme of cheerfulness in the centre of the Reuterkiez district. Inspired by the motto "Life is serious, art is cheerful" (Friedrich Schiller), we want to create an interactive and creative meeting place that emphasises the joy of community and uses art as a tool to promote optimism.

„Erregung öffentlicher Freude“  ist ein kollaboratives Ausstellungsprojekt von Ellen DeElaine (1982) und Sandra Schlipkoeter (1979), das im HilbertRaum im Reuterkiez in Neukölln stattfindet. Als langjährige Kuratorinnen und Mitglieder des HilbertRaums vereinen wir in diesem Projekt 100 künstlerische Positionen aus verschiedenen Ländern. Der HilbertRaum, ein etablierter Projektraum für zeitgenössische Kunst, dient bereits seit 2015 als Plattform für zahlreiche Ausstellungen und ist ein bedeutender Treffpunkt in der Berliner Kunstszene. 

 Unser zentrales Thema ist die Heiterkeit inmitten der gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen. Vom 19.4. bis 12.5.2024 laden wir Künstler:innen dazu ein, Werke zu präsentieren, die Optimismus und Lebensfreude vermitteln. In Anbetracht der Krisen der vergangenen Jahre streben wir danach, einen Raum der Begegnung und Vernetzung zu schaffen. Unser Ziel ist es, die Nachbarschaft einzuladen, sich gemeinsam in der Brennpunktregion Neukölln der Kunst zu widmen.
 Durch ein breites Rahmenprogramm möchten wir neue wie alte Begegnungen ermöglichen sowie eine aktive Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Teilnehmenden, Anwohnern und Mitgliedern. Um den aktiven Umgang mit Kunst und Kultur zu fördern, planen wir während der vier Wochen öffentliche und kostenlose Events für eine breite Zielgruppe, welche sich mit der Thematik Heiterkeit beschäftigen.

 Unser Projekt strebt danach, inmitten des Reuterkiezes eine Atmosphäre der Freude und Heiterkeit zu schaffen. Inspiriert von dem Motto „Ernst ist das Leben, heiter ist die Kunst“ (Friedrich Schiller) möchten wir einen interaktiven und kreativen Treffpunkt schaffen, der die Freude an der Gemeinschaft betont und Kunst als Instrument zur Förderung des Optimismus nutzt.

New show at Lachenmann Art Konstanz 15/3/2024 - 20/4/2024

​With the exhibition ›Constantia‹ Peter Vink captures the essence of the historical era of the city of Constance in an oversized light installation entitled ›Porta de Constantia‹ (›Door of Constance‹). In his second solo exhibition at Lachenmann Art, a portal made of luminous LED arches, which reflects a relevant architectural-historical element of the city of Constance, takes centre stage. This unique contemporary light installation transforms the Constance gallery space into an immersive experience that transports the viewer back to the historical past of Castella Constantia.


As part of his artistic methodology, Peter Vink focusses on building a relationship between the given space and light art. He endeavours to capture the genius loci - the spirit of the space - with his elaborate light constructions. The outlines of individual bricks are the elements he has selected and are an integral part of the buildings of 'Porta de Constantia'. As the main element of his light art, Peter Vink not only interprets the historical artefacts of the city of Constance in his work, but also plays with the architectural elements of his perceived surroundings. In this case, he allows the arched windows and columns of the gallery rooms to merge with his artwork.


Peter Vink is known for creating a dialogue between space and art. The use of materials and the structure of his artworks are particularly impressive. The artwork 'Porta de Constantia', for example, consists of 500 illuminated LED light strips on a total of 250 m long aluminium strips. The individual LED outlines were prefabricated in his Amsterdam studio. The actual work of art was created directly on site over a period of several days, with a total labour input of over 700 hours.


Following the success of the solo exhibition at Galerie Lachenmann Art in Frankfurt in 2023, the current artwork will once again be accompanied by technical sketches, which will be available in a strictly limited edition. In addition, the exhibition will be enriched by individual small light objects, which represent single bricks, extracted stones.


Peter Vink was born in 1974 in Bilt in the Netherlands and graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Famous for his monumental light installations in public and private spaces, Peter Vink has recently wowed visitors to the Amsterdam Light Festival. He regularly receives commissions from public institutions, such as the Dutch government's building department.
